How I Used GetCodeReviews to Write Better Code — and Caught Bugs I Would Have Shipped
The pattern I kept repeating
Every few weeks, I would ship something small — a new API route, a pricing change, a UI tweak — and a few days later I would find a bug in production. Not catastrophic bugs. Annoying ones. A missing await that caused a race condition. An unvalidated input field. A query that worked fine in development but behaved differently under real load.
I knew the pattern. I was moving fast, reviewing my own code, and missing things that a second pair of eyes would have caught in thirty seconds. The problem was that I didn't have a second pair of eyes. I was building alone.
That's why I built GetCodeReviews.
Using the tool on itself
When I first deployed GetCodeReviews and started using it seriously, I pointed it at the codebase I knew best: GetCodeReviews itself. I wasn't expecting much. I had written this code. I had read it. I thought I knew it.
The first review came back with 14 issues.
Twelve of them were real. Two were false positives where the tool misunderstood the context. But twelve out of fourteen being real bugs — in code I had already reviewed myself — was a wake-up call.
The bugs that stood out
A missing await in the review pipeline. I had an async function that called a database query, but I had forgotten to await it in one branch. In development, this never triggered because the timing happened to work. In production, it caused intermittent failures that were nearly impossible to reproduce. GetCodeReviews flagged it as a potential race condition on the first scan.
Two unvalidated inputs in API routes. I was passing user-supplied values directly into a database query in two places. In one case, the value was validated upstream, so the risk was theoretical. In the other case, it was not validated at all — a genuine SQL injection vulnerability that I had completely missed because I was focused on the feature logic, not the security model. GetCodeReviews flagged both as high-severity issues with specific line references and suggested fixes.
Missing rate limiting on a public endpoint. I had a route that accepted code submissions without rate limiting. Any automated script could have hammered it. I had known this was on my list to fix but hadn't gotten to it. Seeing it in the review output, labeled as a medium-severity security issue, made me fix it that day.
The VS Code extension changed my workflow
After running the initial scan, I installed the VS Code extension. This was the bigger change. Instead of reviewing code as a separate step after writing it, I started seeing issues inline — the same way TypeScript errors appear in the Problems panel.
The friction of "go to the website, paste code, read the result" is small but real. It's enough that you skip it when you're in flow. The extension removes that friction. Issues appear as I write. I fix them before I even think of them as bugs.
My review score on new code went from an average of around 58 to consistently above 80. Some files hit 90+. The difference wasn't that I was suddenly writing different code — it was that I was catching the small, stupid mistakes immediately instead of shipping them.
What I tell other solo developers
If you're building alone, you have no one to review your code before it ships. You review it yourself, which means you review it with the same blind spots you had when you wrote it. You know what it's supposed to do, so you see what you intended, not what it actually does.
An automated review doesn't replace human judgment. It can't understand your product requirements or tell you whether your architecture is sensible. But it can catch the mechanical mistakes — the missing awaits, the unvalidated inputs, the security issues that follow predictable patterns — faster than you can, on every file, every time.
For a solo developer, that's enough. That's the gap it fills.
The result
Since I started using GetCodeReviews consistently on my own code, I've shipped fewer bugs and caught two security issues before they reached production. I've also gotten faster — not because I write less careful code, but because I spend less time in the "I wonder if this is a bug" loop that wastes an hour every time it happens.
The tool was worth building. It turns out it was worth using too.
